Speaking about the storyline, Chris told how he believes Peter was capable of murder only because he was ‘not in control of what he’s doing’.

He said: ‘He was not thinking rationally. He’d gone into some weird place that he can sometimes get into, and he can’t stop that. I think that’s what has happened there.

‘He wound himself up to a point where he had tunnel vision and thinks he is being the hero, but was he being a hero?

‘That is where the story goes from here, what was his real intention? I’ve really, really enjoyed playing this story out and there is so much more to come.’

Chris first joined the soap in 2000, making a debut during the 40th anniversary live episode.

He later quit in 2003 and made a swift return in 2007, before quitting again in 2014.

The actor joined the soap again in 2016 and has continued to play Peter ever since, in storylines such as alcohol addiction and custody battles.
