Leon Edwards put on a dominant performance to defend his UFC welterweight title on Saturday night.

‘Rocky’ battered Colby Covington for a large part of the UFC 296 main event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas as former US president Donald Trump watched on.

Covington came out for the first round unsarcastically cautious as his idol watched on from cageside, and it cost him as the champion easily outpointed him with infrequent but eye-catching strikes.

‘Chaos’ began more aggressively in the second stanza before a sharp counter punch killed his ambition and he resorted to circling the Octagon to get away from Edwards.

‘Rocky’ scored with leg kicks that left Covington swollen and kept him in control throughout the five-minute frame to establish a commanding lead on the scorecards.

Covington got the takedown he craved in round three. However, he was unable to do anything with it as his opponent popped back up in double quick time.

The American enjoyed a better round four as he checked an initial leg attack, initiated prolonged grappling exchanges and landed headshots for the very first time in the fight.

Edwards was very competitive, and the round could have gone either way.

Down the cards, Covington came out aggressively hunting for the takedown and he got it when Edwards happily engaged him in a wrestling match.

At one point, the 170lb king got close to securing a triangle choke submission, but Covington escaped and ended the fight in top position.

All three judges scored the fight 49-46 and Edwards retained his title.

Post-fight, he got upset discussing Covington’s pre-fight trash talk.

The leadup to UFC 296 was marred by controversy as Covington joked about taking Edwards to hell to see his father, who was murdered when the Englishman was just 13 years old.

Covington’s comment almost started a brawl at the pre-fight press conference, but the feud between two of the best welterweights on the planet was ultimately settled inside the cage.

“This fight was very emotional for me,” Edwards told Joe Rogan. This guy used my dad’s murder as entertainment. It took a lot for me to calm down, stay focused to win this fight.

“After the press conference, I went backstage and was crying because of the rage. To this day, it still breaks my heart that he got murdered, and he said my dad should burn in hell.

“He’s a great competitor, but just a dirty human being.”
